Some believe the Federal Estate Tax Exemption for next year (2011) will be $3.5 million; most others believe the Federal Estate Tax Exemption will revert back to $1 million. That is the dilemma! With Congress doing “nothing” before the November elections, who knows what will happen after the elections. Nevertheless, we as practitioners, cannot wait for Congress to determine our clients’ estate plan. We must be proactive.

So, mark your calendar for April 28, 2011 for a comprehensive three (3) hour CE Symposium on THE ESTATE TAX: THE NEW LAW – CHANGES, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES. We have deferred our fall CE Program to early 2011 to cover all the issues surrounding this Estate Tax situation.

Here are the specifics and tentative outline of the topics we will discuss at the tax symposium:

CE Credits: Three (3) Laws and Regs for Investment Advisors, Insurance Professionals, Financial Planners, Trust Officers, Public Accountants, CPAs, CFP®

Date: April 28, 2011

Time: 8:30 a.m. – Continental Breakfast
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon

Location: Omni Newport News Hotel
1000 Omni Blvd.
Newport News, VA 23606

Agenda Topics
  • The Estate Tax Systems (Federal and State) – Past and Present.
  • 2011 Estate Tax Law –Changes, Challenges and Opportunities.
  • Review Of Current Estate Plans – What Must We Do?
  • Tax Formula Dispositive Provisions in Trusts and Wills –Which Work, Which Don’t Work under the new tax law.
  • Carry over Basis vs. Step-up Basis issues at death. How to handle.
  • Estate and Trust Administration issues for Descendants in 2011 and beyond.
  • Use of the New Virginia “Trust Protector” Law in Wills and Trusts – the ideal “back-up” plan to guarantee an estate plan works.
  • Court reformations of current Irrevocable Trusts (ILITS, GRATS, QPRTs, CRTs, etc) due to Tax or Legislative changes. When to use.
  • Protect client’s wealth through the generations using a tax efficient Multi-Generation Plan under the New Virginia law and GST Exemptions.
  • Using life insurance (second to die) and other financial products in this new estate planning environment. Ferris & Associates attorneys are not licensed to advise or offer these products so YOUR ROLE is critical in making the “right” ownership and beneficiary designations for your client’s estate tax plan.
The tax symposium’s cost is $30.00. To register early, please complete the registration form and fax it back to 757-220-8029. Because of this timely and important subject matter, we anticipate a large attendance so register early. The course is limited to 75 participants.

Until we meet in early January, any help we can provide you in this uncertain tax environment, please call me, Suzanne Thoman, Esq. or Carrie Rae Wiser, Esq. for Estate Planning or Carrie Rae Wiser, Esq. for Estate and Probate Administration.
